"Winky Solves A Mystery"

A Little History

Column by Max Elliot Anderson

As you saw earlier, I grew up as a reluctant reader. But when I was younger, my father also wrote children's books. "Winky Solves a Mystery," was published in 1948 when I was only 2 years old, and "Winky and the Ghost Lion" was published in 1950.

With a heritage like that, I should have known that I'd begin writing for children one day too. If you're dreaming of becoming a writer, my story should encourage you because if it can happen for me, it can happen for you.

Someone told me early in my writing journey that if you truly believe you can write and have the desire to do it, you're right. And if you don't fully believe you can do it, you're right. Each of us is unique with a fresh voice like none other. Look around you, write about your experiences. Write what you know and what you love. The path isn't an easy one, but then, if it were, the whole world would be writing books, right? Don't think of yourself as unpublished, think instead that you are only pre-published, and keep on working to be the very best you can possibly be.

My story “No Christmas Presents” has made it to the final selection round for Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Gift of Christmas (Working Title). Only about five percent of the submitted stories have made it this far. The vast majority of stories in this “last round” will appear in the book.

The publication date is scheduled for October 2010.

This is a hardcover Christmas gift book that will be available in addition to their other book for Christmas, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Christmas Magic.

I've now received the cover artwork for my new book, Barney and the Runaway from Comfort Publishing.

Guideposts

I had a true story published in the May – June 2005 issue of the Guideposts' sister publication, Angels on Earth. The title is, "His Eye is on the Sparrow." This is a harrowing, true life account of the time when my father and I were working on a documentary film, "Living Legends." The project was about life in the Native American homes of Indian Christians. We became lost in the Arizona wilderness in freezing temperatures. Our car was disabled and we had to spend the night. The next day we hiked out and found help. I hope you'll have a chance to read this story.

Captain Jack’s Treasure & River Rampage next in the series.

Sam, Tony, and Tyler took scuba lessons together. Tony’s father owned a marina, so Tony got them in for free. After the boys completed the course, they decided to try their new skills in the ocean. The only problem was, none of them had permission to go, or to take one of the sailboats out for their diving adventure. Everything went well until the biggest storm the boys had ever seen, blew up from out of nowhere, and they found themselves stranded on Lost Island. But, if they thought the worst had happened, they were wrong. What about those high-powered speedboats that mysteriously disappeared? And what were they going to tell their parents, even if they did get off the island?

"Legend of White Wolf" to be re-published in 2011
