Books for Boys blog. Often # 1 on Google http://booksandboys.blogspot.com My life has been surrounded with the production of films, television commercials, and video programs. I shot part of a film in Germany, for the first time, at age 16. I've been involved in production ever since with a PBS Gospel Music special, hundreds of national television commercials, and countless other films and video programs... ...a New Direction ...then something happened that would turn my life upside down. As a result of 9/11, my professional video production business came to a stop. In the three years that followed, I began to research why I had become a reluctant reader. After an extensive search, I set out to write the kinds of books that I would have enjoyed as a child. All the while, my focus was on just one other reluctant boy reader. Sam Cooper and his friends have the chance of a lifetime to go rafting down the mighty Colorado River. The rains have been heavy this season, turning the raging river even more treacherous. The boys become separated from the main group, their rubber raft is going flat, and now they’re on their own. They have their hands full with a crusty prospector, his gold mine, a gang of outlaw bikers, and a desperate river escape on their makeshift wooden raft. Think that’s the worst that could happen? Well, it isn’t. One day, Brian Fisher discovered a white wolf pup caught in a trap and set it free. Since then, Brian was convinced that he and the wolf shared a special bond. Stung by the disbelief of his family and friends, Brian sets out to confirm that his fantastic story is true and ends up getting a lot more than he bargained for. He soon finds himself caught out in a snowstorm and attacked by a mountain lion. When a group of lawless hunters begins killing off the wolf population, Brian is caught right in the middle! Take an eleven-year-old boy, a mysterious white wolf, a dangerous band of illegal hunters, and all the excitement of the rugged outdoors near Yellowstone National Park. Put it all together in a book and you have an adventure story even the most reluctant of readers will pick up and enjoy. |
The Reluctant Reader...
Right from the beginning I was a reluctant reader. Even though my father is a famous author of over 70 books, I've never liked to read. You'll notice in this picture (at right), I'm only looking at the cover of one of my dad's books. Out of a family of 7 children, I'm the very last person you would ever expect to take up writing.
NEW! Sam Cooper Adventure Series Now available in bookstores & on Amazon.com and others. This new adventure series has the same characters in each book. Book #1 is Lost Island Smugglers. THE Comfort Publishing ADVENTURE "SERIES" Each of these books has completely different characters, setting, and plot, making the "series" unique from others you might find. Lost Island Smugglers UPDATE Page http://lostislandsmugglers.blogspot.com To be released August 1st, 2010 For Latest News...The reasons why people write are as varied as the number of writers. The following story sums up why I write for readers 8 and up, especially boys.
I received a message on Facebook from a mother who wanted me to know that her ten-year-old son had just written a review for my new book, Lost Island Smugglers. It was posted on Amazon, so I went there, took a look, and found the following: 5 out of 5 stars Peyton's Review
By Diane M. Graham "DMGRAHAM" - See all my reviews This review is from: Lost Island Smugglers (Paperback) This is the best book I've ever read in my life. My favorite parts are: #1 The high speed chase when Sam, Tyler and Tony are chased by the men in large black coats. #2 The deadly storm when the boat rips in two. #3 When Sam, Tyler and Tony wash up on Lost Island. #4 When Sam, Tyler and Tony take a ride in the submarine. The pictures are awesome and give me a good view of the things in Lost Island Smugglers. I will tell all my friends about it. Peyton I went back to Facebook and sent a note of appreciation to Peyton's mother, Diane, telling her that I had just started a new book for those 8 and up boy readers. I won't disclose the particulars here, but I told her that the name of my hero main character in the story was Logan. After reading the review above, I decided to change his name to Peyton.
Diane wrote back to tell me that she and Peyton had been using my book as a read aloud. They'd finished reading for the night, and the family went to bed. At 1 o'clock in the morning, Diane got up and found Peyton reading my book, under the covers, with a flashlight, because he couldn't wait to see how it would end.
I have a long history of producing films, TV commercials, and video programs. I'm telling you, you couldn't write a better script to help tell other parents, and young readers, that Lost Island Smugglers is a book that young readers find hard to put down. Kids tell me that reading one of my books, "...is like being in an exciting movie." Thank you Peyton, and thank you Diane.
